GEM INDIA Widows and Needy Women
In June, 2009, while we were in one of our council sessions with our GEM INDIA leadership, the Lord expanded the door of ministry to more women.
We have enlarged our selection process to include needy women as well as widows. A needy woman is one who has been abandoned by her husband. We will also help needy married women when it is obvious that the couple does not have enough money to adequately provide for the basic needs of their family. Many of the people who live in the adjacent village and surrounding area live in circular one room thatched-roof homes. There is no indoor plumbing. “Running water” is accomplished by the women running and/or walking to the local government-drilled well which is used by the entire community.
There are many women who come to worship at the GEM campus church. Some are widows and some are needy women. However, we also want to minister to those who do not attend church. We want all of these women to be treated equally. We have two sewing machines in the GEM campus church. We desire to buy several more sewing machines. There is a need to pay for a part-time seamstress to train the local women. We will freely train the women in the skills of being a seamstress. Initially, we will supply the fabric during their training process. Once they are trained, they can purchase their own fabric and make clothing to sell. They will be allowed to take turns on the sewing machines that are in the church until they have the means to purchase their own sewing machines. This training will help the local women to have a home industry when they are not laboring in the fields. Since many of the women are too old to work in the fields, this will provide them with a means of income. There is no welfare system or retirement pension for most of the population of India. Of course, GEM does not only desire to meet the physical needs of these many women, but to also help them with their spiritual needs.
Pray to the Lord of the Harvest, Jesus Christ. We need His guidance for the proper selection of the women. God knows who is ripe unto harvest much better than we could ever know for it is God who reads the heart of mankind. “For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts [are higher] than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)
